Gracie would go on to win UFC 2 and 4 as well. He was the most dominating in the sport, and opened the eyes of everyone across the world. In UFC 3, he didn’t lose, although he ran into a very tough fighter who nearly beat him. Gracie came back in UFC 5 for a superfight match up with Ken Shamrock, which would go the distance and end in a draw.
Other fighters have done exceptionally well in the UFC, although none of them had the impact as Royce Gracie. Fighters like Ken Shamrock, Dan Severn, Oleg Taktarov, Matt Hughes, and Matt Sylivia have also done very well. Matt Hughes is also regarded as one of the best, as he fights in the Welterweight class and is considered pound for pound to be the best fighter in the world.
In the world of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), the UFC has made a big impact. In the beginning, there were no rules and no judges, just one on one fights until someone either tapped out, got knocked out, or the ref through in the towel. Fighters also fought in a tournament style as well, which took 3 fights to win the championship.
Over the years, there were several changes. The UFC would start with judges after a few years, along with eliminating the tournaments. The fights would eventually go to one on one, which was great for the fans. Although the fights didn’t have time limits in the beginning, they do now. Kanske brände man för mycket krut på onsdagens Fight night, eller så anses publiken i Texas vara trogen oavsett card. Lördagens utbud i oktagonen är kort sagt i klenaste laget. Men de tre huvudmatcherna håller tillräcklig nivå för att skapa intresse.
Fem bälten sitter säkert hos fem just nu ohotade mästare i UFC. Det är med den bakgrunden som alla fans får se fram emot en något mer stillsam period. De stjärnspäckade kvällarna återkommer först mot slutet av året. Fram till dess ska rankinglistor rätas ut, utmanare plockas fram och sista chansen ges för de som hänger löst.
MW: Rich Franklin (27-4-0) Vs. Vitor Belfort (18-8-0)
Ett main event efter samma koncept som när Royce Gracie återvände för en helt menlös fight mot Matt Hughes, fast betydligt mindre menlös. Belfort drog iväg tre slagserier i slutet av 90-talet, sänkte sina motståndare på en minut vardera, och höjdes till skyarna. ”Fenomenet” som endast var 18 år när det begav sig, hyllades som övermänsklig, gudabenådad och en frisk kontrast till alla brottare som dominerade samma epok. Sedan kom verkligheten ikapp, kometen slocknade och kvar stod en fighter som stundtals blixtrar till, men lika ofta faller platt när självkänslan sviker.

En kamp mot hjärnspöken, personliga tragedier och anklagelser om att vara en medelmåtta. För Franklin är situationen mindre mystisk. Matteläraren från Ohio är som alltid i kanonform, en jätte i mellanvikt, offensivt farlig och defensivt lite svajig. Hans främsta uppgift blir att hålla hakan nere och garden uppe, och vara sitt vanliga jag. För Belfort gäller det att dra tillbaka klockan till 1997 och slå femtio kedjeslag på fyra sekunder i ett moln av rök. Ingenting mindre duger för upprättelse.
HW: Mirko Filipovic (25-6-2) Vs. Junior Dos Santos (8-1-0)

Men brassen kan bevisligen sänka vad han träffar och har redan två KO:s i buren. Han har däremot inte mött någon med samma CV som ”Cro Cop”, vars stående kunskaper har bevisats under femton år som proffs. Men teori är en sak och utförande en annan. Världens mest fruktade kroat är bister, introvert och tycks inte finna någon glädje i att fightas längre. Det är länge sedan han dominerade som under fornstora dagar, och gnistan tycks ha slocknat. Tio år yngre ”Cigano” har med all sin entusiasm ett mentalt övertag som inte ska underskattas.
WW: Martin Kampmann (15-2-0) vs. Paul Daley (21-8-2)
Danmarks stolthet Kampmann är åter igen Skandinaviens ende representant i buren, och inget tyder på att han skulle vara på väg ut. I en uttalad kvalmatch för en chans på titeln kommer brittiska doldisen Daley in som ersättare för Mike Swick, och mer än en proffstyckare höjde belåtet ögonbrynen över detta. ”Semtex” har slagit ut 17 av sina 21 besegrade motståndare, och har ett klipp i nävarna som få i divisionen kan matcha. Kampmann är en nog så talangfull thaiboxare, men mer av en metodisk sådan. I ett rent utbyte av käftsmällar kommer Daleys kraft och precision förr eller senare att avgöra, vilket lägger upp en intressant strategisk utmaning för dansken.
WW: Josh Koscheck (14-4-0) Vs. Frank Trigg (19-6-0)
“Twinkle toes” sa det så bra själv när han beskrev Koscheck som en yngre, snabbare variant av honom själv. Krasst men sant. 37 år gammal fick Trigg en sista chans till UFC-karriär, vilket någonstans får betraktas som generöst av Zuffa. Den rutinerade brottaren har haft sina chanser på titlar och stora skalper, men aldrig nått toppen. På lördag finns bara erfarenhet som äss i rockärmen, när ”Kos” i alla andra avseenden lyser starkare.
LW: Tyson Griffin (13-2-0) Vs. Hermes Franca (20-7-0)
Annorlunda kontrastmatch mellan en man som fightas enligt skolboken, och en som slåss och härjar på sitt eget oförutsägbara sätt. Griffin är alltid en underhållande maskin på femmans växel och en förmögenhet av bonusar för ”bästa fight” bakom sig. Franca är i jämförelse lika slumpartad som sina experimentella hårfärger. Att han redan förlorat mot Edgar och Sherk bådar inte heller gott, då Griffin i stort sett är identisk i stil och strategi.
LW: Efrain Escudero (12-0-0) Vs. Cole Miller (15-3-0)
TUF-vinnaren med smarta gameplans och stabilt game tar ännu ett steg upp i divisionen, och ställer sin brottning mot originalet Miller. ”Magrinho” som han kallas, är av samma virke som bröderna Lauzon, en gänglig och kreativ blandning av vilda västern-boxning, udda vinklar och tempoväxlingar, samt inte minst en arsenal av bländande submissions. Det kommer krävas rejält mycket stabilitet av Escudero för att hantera det.
MW: Drew McFedries (8-5-0) Vs. Tomasz Drwal (16-2-0)
Ska man vara endimensionell och hänga kvar i buren är det med hjälp av svingande knytnävar. På lördags ställs två ståtliga bevis för detta mot varandra. Knogar kommer att träffa skallben, knän kommer att vika sig, en kommer att somna sött och Dana White kommer därefter med ett leende förlänga vinnarens kontrakt av ren kärlek. Fullt medveten om att de båda herrarna fortfarande inte kan stava till ”submissionförsvar”. Boxning med 4 oz handskar blir aldrig gammalt.
LW: Jim Miller (14-2-0) Vs. Steve Lopez (12-1-0)
Redan nere på utfyllnadsmatcher. Miller är en iller av energi och offensiva attacker, och kan förstöra nöjet för allt utom monsterbrottare. Nya namnet Lopez är inte riktigt på den nivån, och har inga pigga odds inför debuten.
LW: Rafaello Oliveira (9-1-0) Vs. Nik Lentz (18-3-1)
Två än så länge anonyma killar som representerar varsin välbekant stereotyp. Brassen Oliviera pryder dräkten med ett svartbälte, drar ut folk med förbundna ögon och allt det där. Men har inte fightats på toppnivå. Lentz är en amerikansk arbetshäst med tjurnacke, pannben av stål och en stor dos brottning.
WW: Rick Story (7-3-0) vs. Brian Foster (14-3-0)
Blandat smågodis i talangpoolen, inget att skriva löpsedlar om, bra men inte bäst och så vidare.
LHW: Eliot Marshall (7-2-0) Vs. Jason Brilz (17-1-1)
Brottare mot grappler, med skillnaden att svartbältet Marshall dessutom börjar få till ett bra flow stående och i clinch. Brilz har sett bra ut i UFC hittills, men det här blir en större tröskel än tidigare.
LHW: Vladimir Matyushenko (22-4-0) Vs. Igor Pokrajac (21-5-0)
Någon som är sugen på att jävlas med en 37 år gammal vitryss med begynnande flint, ärrvävnad i halva ansiktet, tolv års erfarenhet som burfighter och ringnamnet ”städaren”? Matyushenko är ruggig på alla sätt som går. Pokrajac är en lovande brottare, och dessutom polare till sin landsman Cro Cop vilket förklarar hur han hamnade i UFC. Liknande records till trots är det inte ens värt att jämföra nivån av rutin. Matyushenko slogs om titeln i UFC två år innan Pokrajac gick sin första match.
LW: Rob Emerson (10-7-0) Vs. Rafael Dos Anjos (11-4-0)
En grabb från Kalifornien som gillar att svinga och en brasiliansk man som gillar brasiliansk jiu jitsu. Tänka sig.
